HIGH TECH BUILDING

The chatter in all the trade magazines is how to build everything high tech. There is new high tech structural lumber, new high tech furnaces and boilers, new high tech roofing and siding, new high tech windows and doors, new high tech building practices, and even new high tech toilets. I have noticed that for each new item there are some stalwart products and many low quality also rans.

GREEN BUILD IS LUXURY

One of the glaring features of many of these new innovations is that they generally fall under the heading of luxury items rather than necessities. Most new items will add to the cost of a home and can easily push the price beyond the reach of the average American family. One of the hotly discussed luxuries these days is renewable energy systems that will help save the planet. The major problem I find as a builder is when people get the price that solar, or geothermal energy systems will cost, they invariably choose to pass.

REASON RENEWABLES ARE FAILING

We are all familiar with the Solyndra,  Ener1, and the Chevy Volt scandal that the Obama administration perpetrated on the American public. The real cause of the failure of these investments is that they are unmarketable. The costs are too high, the benefits are too small, and the savings in energy is negligible when calculated out 20 to 25 years. So to try to sell solar panels, or an electric car battery, or an electric car is difficult because the mathematics is militating against you.

WANT TO PROTECT ENVIRONMENT 

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t want to protect the environment but the numbers simply don’t work with renewable energy.

HIGH EFFICIENCY RATHER THAN GREEN

What does work is high efficiency products that can save substantial amounts of money on your traditional energy bill. So, more insulation, 2X6 wall frame, hi-efficiency windows and doors, high-efficiency furnaces, better home designs, efficient window placement, careful lot lay out, careful land purchase, smarter house placement, all can work in your favor and save thousands over time. But simply to knee jerk into renewables without careful analysis is an expansive venture and could wind up costing you thousands both now and in the future.
